FS703 Fire Resistant Silicone Sealant is a low-modulus, neutral-cure silicone sealant for sealing linear gaps and reinstating fire performance in compartment walls and floors. This option is supplied as a 310ml white cartridge. It is tested for gaps from 10mm to 220mm and for movement joints up to 20% when used with FJ203 Fire Rope. Suitable for sealing linear joints in flexible walls, rigid walls and floors.
Overview
FS703 Fire Resistant Silicone Sealant is a low modulus, neutral cure silicone sealant for linear gap sealing where fire performance needs to be reinstated in compartment walls and floors. This product option is supplied as a 310ml white cartridge. Fire resistance of up to 4 hours has been tested to EN 1366-4. The sealant is also classified F-EXT-INT-CC-25LM and has ETA 20/1215, CE 2812-CPR-JA5052 and CF5326 approvals listed.
The sealant is tested in gaps from 10mm to 220mm. It is listed for static linear joints between masonry to masonry, rigid wall, rigid floor and flexible wall constructions. For movement joints, 20% movement is stated when used with FJ203 Fire Rope. Areas of use include health and leisure facilities, schools, universities, modular construction, commercial buildings, hospitals, retail and industrial units, train stations and nuclear power plants.
Performance Data
Reaction to fire is classified as Euroclass E to EN 13501-1. Air permeability has been tested to EN 1026 up to 600Pa. Acoustic rating is stated as up to 66dB to EN ISO 10140:2-2010. Maximum allowable deformation is 25% to ISO 11600, and movement capability is stated as 25% to ISO 9047 with classification 25LM to ISO 11600.
The sealant has a thixotropic viscosity and is based on a neutral cure silicone sealant (alcoxy). Cure rate is stated as approximately 1.5mm/day at +23°C and 50% RH, with skin formation in approximately 25 minutes under the same conditions. Specific gravity is approximately 1.4. Elongation at break is stated as approximately 250% to EN ISO 8339 method A and approximately 600% to DIN 53504 S2.
Tensile strength values are stated as approximately 0.4N/mm² to EN ISO 8339 method A at 100%, approximately 0.45N/mm² to DIN 53504 S2 at 100%, approximately 0.4N/mm² to EN ISO 8339 A at -20°C at 100%, approximately 0.5N/mm² to EN ISO 8339 A at -30°C at 100%, approximately 0.5N/mm² to EN ISO 8339 method A at break, and approximately 1.6N/mm² to DIN 53504 S2 at break. Elastic recovery is approximately 90% to EN ISO 7389 method A at 100%, Shore A hardness is approximately 24 to ISO 868, and consistency is 0mm with no sagging to ISO 7390 (20mm). Service temperature is stated as -40°C to +150°C.
Environmental performance entries listed for the product are EPD (Generic Silicone Sealant EPD from FEICA), EMICODE EC1+ and M1.
Preparation
Surfaces must be clean and sound, and free from dirt, grease and other contamination. Wood, plaster and brick may be damp, but they must not be saturated or exposed to running water during cure. Porous or metallic surfaces may require priming before application. Before work starts, the specification should be checked for the fire rating and gap size required.
If a decorative finish is required to surrounding substrates, masking tape can be used. The listed tools are a sealant caulking gun, a sealant profiling tool or spatula, and masking tape where a decorative edge is required. Protective equipment should be worn during handling and use.
How to Use
Backing material should be inserted as required and oversized to the joint width so that it remains stable and provides the correct seal depth. Where a rock mineral fibre backer has been applied, a light water spray is stated to aid adhesion. The nozzle should be cut to the required bead size and angle, and the sealant should then be gunned into the gap to the required depth using even trigger pressure. The seal should be worked and tooled to a smooth finish immediately with a wet profiling tool or spatula.
Coverage is calculated using the stated formula: (Gap Width x Depth x Total Length) / product packaging = number of units. Immediately after application, excess sealant and masking tape should be removed before cure. Once cured, the sealant can only be removed mechanically, subject to the surface type.
Storage, Limitations and Maintenance
Shelf life is stated as 12 months when stored as recommended in original unopened containers. The product literature states that it should not be used around CPVC pipes. Where it is used around Pegler X-Press Carbon Steel pipes, the pipe manufacturer should be consulted and their recommendations followed. After installation, no maintenance is required, and routine inspection is advised to check that the system has not been damaged.
