Envirobed Adhesive is a polymer-modified cementitious adhesive mortar supplied in 25kg bags for fixing insulation boards and brick slips to masonry and cement-board substrates. It requires the addition of clean water to achieve a workable consistency and can be applied by hand or spray. The product is grey and has an application temperature range of 5°C to 25°C. Suitable for bedding insulation boards and brick slips in external wall insulation systems.
Envirobed Adhesive is a polymer-modified adhesive mortar designed for installing insulation boards and brick slips onto most masonry and cement-board substrates. It is supplied as a factory-produced dry powder incorporating cement, graded aggregates and chemical modifiers. When mixed with clean water, it provides a workable mortar blend suitable for internal and external use. Conformity to the requirements of ETAG 004 is stated in the Technical Data Sheet.
The product is supplied in 25kg bags with a stated shelf life of 12 months when stored unopened in dry conditions above 5°C. The fresh-mortar density is given as 1757g/l, and water retention as 98%. The colour is grey.
Intended Use
The adhesive is intended for bedding insulation boards and brick slips within systems where fixing to masonry or cement-board substrates is required. Application can be carried out by hand or spray, provided the substrate and environmental conditions comply with the stated limits.
Preparation
Surfaces must be sound, clean, dry, and free from materials that may impair adhesion. Application to shiny surfaces is not permitted. Any defects that may lead to moisture penetration must be rectified. Masking around the work area is recommended and must be removed before the adhesive has dried. Scaffolding should be independently tied to allow uninterrupted application.
Mixing
Each 25kg bag should be mixed with approximately 4.5–5 litres of clean water using suitable mechanical mixing equipment. The mortar should be mixed to achieve a workable consistency, using the minimum amount of water required. If the product stiffens on standing, it may be remixed without adding further water.
Application
Application temperatures must be between 5°C and 25°C. The adhesive must not be applied if frost is forecast within 24 hours, in wet conditions, onto hot substrates or onto elevations in direct sunlight. To prevent issues such as dampness or discolouration of finishes, use below the damp-proof course or within 150mm of ground level should be avoided.
For full-surface bedding, a thin, pressed coat should be trowelled across the entire insulation-board surface, followed by combing with a 10×12mm notched trowel. The product may also be applied in dabs, provided the adhesive covers at least 60% of the board surface. Individual dabs should not exceed 25mm thickness once the board is pressed to the substrate.
Specification clauses in NBS M21 relating to these works should be followed.
Protection
Protection from rain, direct sun and wind is required during application and early curing. Sheeting to the façade or scaffold is advised. Adjacent building components, including windows and sills, must be protected during use.
Coverage
The stated coverage for bedding adhesive is approximately 4–5kg/m². These values do not allow for wastage or irregular substrates, and allowances must be made where surfaces are uneven or misaligned.
Storage
Bags must be stored unopened in dry conditions above 5°C. The shelf life is stated as 12 months from manufacture under these conditions.
